  • Create a friendly environment where people enjoy working
  • Recognize achievement – but do it sincerely

  • Maintaining positive communication – be the active listener
  • Encourage friendly competition but ensure that it doesn’t not become overly-competitive
  • Align their targets with the corporate strategy
  • Let them see the possibilities – where can their work take them; career path or portfolio?
  • Demonstrate the right values and morals for others to follow
  • Recognize the introvert and the extrovert – and modify your style accordingly
  • Allow them to be creative – modify your view of risk and empower them to think for themselves
  • Distribute some of your authority – break down bureaucracy that blocks decision making and free thought
  • Encourage suggestions – have an open ‘issues board’ for all to see and contribute to
  • Remember attention spans – people work in bursts and cannot maintain efficiency over long periods
  • Disrupt the status quo – have team lunches / dinners; encourage different to run the weekly meetings
